  • A Background of Venipuncture/Phlebotomy
  • Anatomy & physiology of the arm, Identify the veins in the forearm that are suitable for venipuncture.
  • Describing the steps required to maintain safety and meet the needs of the patient before, during and following venipuncture. (Anxiety, medical phobia / Squeamishness)
  • Explain possible contraindications/risks of venipuncture
  • Needle stick injuries/ haematosis
  • Professional issues relating to: competence, valid informed consent, patient assessment and infection control
  • The process of taking blood / Correct order of draw
  • Additives/ Blood bottles
  • factors to consider when choosing a vein
  • Identify, assemble, and use the equipment required for venipuncture
  • The correct use of safer sharps Bin
  • How this procedure should be documented/ confidentiality

Day 2

  • Practical whole day

  • Role play and & Quizzes to test knowledge.
