- A Background of Venipuncture/Phlebotomy
- Anatomy & physiology of the arm, Identify the veins in the forearm that are suitable for venipuncture.
- Describing the steps required to maintain safety and meet the needs of the patient before, during and following venipuncture. (Anxiety, medical phobia / Squeamishness)
- Explain possible contraindications/risks of venipuncture
- Needle stick injuries/ haematosis
- Professional issues relating to: competence, valid informed consent, patient assessment and infection control
- The process of taking blood / Correct order of draw
- Additives/ Blood bottles
- factors to consider when choosing a vein
- Identify, assemble, and use the equipment required for venipuncture
- The correct use of safer sharps Bin
- How this procedure should be documented/ confidentiality
Day 2
- Practical whole day
